Northeastern Forest Alliance

About us

Why we run a rescue without a kennel.

Northeastern Forest Alliance is a small nonprofit that coordinates cross-state forestry work where Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York meet. We focus on shared problems that individual state forestry agencies cannot tackle alone: forest health across political boundaries, invasive species response, and data-sharing to support working forests.

Private forest lands in the northern states of New England and New York cover millions of acres, mostly owned by families. Pests do not care about state lines. Neither do wildfires, climate pressure, or markets for pulpwood and sawtimber.

NEFA is a small organization with one goal: make it easier for state agencies, land trusts, and landowners in the four-state region to do common work. We convene, we coordinate, and we publish data the field can use.

We are not a large-staffed organization. We are a clearinghouse and a convener, designed to be lean so most of our budget funds shared projects on the ground.

Leadership and governance

We are governed by a five-member volunteer board that meets quarterly. Day-to-day operations are led by a small paid staff. Full bios and our annual Form 990 are available on request.

Financial transparency

Our most recent audit is available upon request at [email protected]. Over 91% of expenses fund direct animal care. Administrative costs run under 6%; fundraising under 3%.
